FAQ’s: Compounded Tirzepatide:

Q: Is Compounded Tirzepatide FDA Approved?

A: Tirzepatide is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of type II diabetes under the brand name medication, Mounjaro®. Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro®, is also seeking FDA approval of tirzepatide for weight management, potentially as soon as Q4 2023.

Q: What is a Compounding Pharmacy? What is Compounded Medication?

A: Compounding pharmacies specialize in customizing medications often for situations where patient needs are not satisfied through commercially available products available at retail pharmacies. Examples of such needs include different dosing, patient allergies (i.e. to medication fillers, dyes, etc.), variable route of delivery, lower costs, ease of use, or others. Medications dispensed by compounding pharmacies utilize similar active pharmaceutical ingredients as those procured from a retail pharmacy.

Q: What is Tirzepatide? How is it Different from Semaglutide?

A: Tirzepatide, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Mounjaro®, is part of a new class of type II diabetes medication that stimulates both Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) AND Glucose Dependent Insulinotropic Peptide (GIP) receptors. That combined efficacy led to superior weight loss in comparison with GLP-1 medication like Semaglutide, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Ozempic®, Wegovy®, and Rybelsus®.

Q: Is GLP-1 GIP Medication like Compounded Tirzepatide an Injectable?

A: Yes. Compounded Tirzepatide is delivered via a self-administered once weekly injection with an ultra-tiny needle and specialized syringes. In our experience, (even needle phobic) members find this experience well received, simple, and comfortable.

Q: How Frequently Does One Inject Compounded Tirzepatide?

A: Once a week.

Q: What If I Have Questions About the Compounded Tirzepatide Medication, Dosing, or Injection Practice?

A: Any question about compounded tirzepatide, your dosing, or safe and proper injection technique can be discussed with your JumpstartMD Clinician (or Medical Team).

Q: What If I Only Want to Use Branded forms of Medication such as GLP-1 GIP’s like Mounjaro® or GLP-1’s like Wegovy® or Ozempic®?

A: We can prescribe branded GLP-1 GIP medication like Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) and GLP-1 medication like Wegovy® (semaglutide) or Ozempic® (semaglutide) to interested and eligible members but with two important catches.

One, as of July 2023, there are major supply chain shortages for Ozempic® (semaglutide) and Wegovy® (semaglutide), particularly for the lowest 3 doses. Those shortages can make obtaining those medications challenging. Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) has also had supply chain challenges. All 3 medications are thus on the FDA shortage list as of July 2023.

Two, while Wegovy® (semaglutide) is approved for weight management, Ozempic® (semaglutide) and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) are currently only approved for treatment of type II diabetes. As such, one’s individual insurance plan may or may not cover those medications depending on your medical history and coverage.

Without insurance coverage, all of those medications are cost-prohibitively expensive for most people (i.e. approximately $1,000 per month). For our members who are not able to obtain insurance coverage for branded GLP-1 or GLP-1 GIP medication nor afford full retail pricing, compounded versions of those medications remain a better option.

Q: What If I Can’t Afford Retail Versions of GLP-1 or GLP-1 GIP Medication but Don’t Want to Take Compounded Versions Either? Do I Have to Take Medication? Are There Other Medication Options Available to Me?

A: First off, know that you do not have to take weight management medication to be successful at JumpstartMD. With or without medication, our team of health coaches and clinicians will use proven science and compassionate expertise to guide and support you along a journey to improved health and well-being.

Secondly, however, if you are interested in and eligible for medications other than GLP-1’s (like semaglutide) or GLP-1 GIP’s (like tirzepatide), other classes of generic or non-generic weight management medications can also be prescribed either alone or in combination and also as an adjuvant to healthy lifestyle changes involving diet, exercise, and more.

Q: Do GLP-1 and GLP-1 GIP Medications Help People Lose Weight All By Themselves? Or Are Healthy Lifestyle Changes Also Important For Best Results?

A: On the one hand, superior weight loss outcomes obtained through GLP-1 and GLP-1 GIP medications suggest a new era of medical weight management where an abundance of people in need can achieve positively life changing results.

On the other hand, studies show that medications like GLP-1’s and GLP-1 GIP’s are far more effective when used as an adjuvant to healthy lifestyle changes including diet, exercise, and more. That’s true in terms of achieving superior weight loss outcomes but importantly also in sustaining those results for the long-term.

What’s more, it’s should also be true in terms of preventing and reversing major diseases, such as diabetes, prediabetes, heart attack, strokes, and more.

In short, for best results, think of these potentially life changing medications as a complement to healthy habits that, when combined together, can deliver and sustain truly transformational results.
